Wake-Up Call: The Annual Oscars Show

The afternoon before the 80th annual Academy Awards, three movie experts visited the WNRN studios for the Wake-Up Call’s annual Oscars show. Ben Nuckols and Tom Dumontier (two films reviewers for WNRN), and Adam Greenbaum (the owner of an independent movie theater) discussed their predictions for winners, and delved into what types of movies tend to get nominated and win. They also talked about how the recent writers’ strike has affected the Academy Awards - will this be a laugh-out-loud night to remember, or a quickly thrown-together mess?

Give your own predictions for the winners, by commenting after the podcast!

Preparing for Virginia’s primary

It’s two days ’til the primary polls open in Virginia and on the February 10th edition of the Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call, host Rick Moore explores this years’ presidential race.  Joined by Pete Ronayne and Jim Sofka, both currently professors at the Federal Executive Institute with politcal backgrounds, they discuss last week’s Super Tuesday and what it meant (or didn’t mean) for the candidates. Ronayne and Sofka also talk about Tuesday’s Potomac primary - the focus on the Democratic over the Republican candidates, whether it will decide the Democratic presidential nominee, and the recent emergence of Virginia as a battleground state.

Plus, the guests explain the primary process as a whole: how it works, the differences between the Democratic and Republican Races, and the importance of so-called “Super Delegates.” Callers also ask their own questions about the race.

How Charlottesville Non-Profits Work

On the Sunday, February 3rd edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call, host Rick Moore speaks with leaders from several non-profit organizations in Charlottesville. Mary Burkholz from the shelter Caring For Creatures, UVA business professor Rob Patterson, and Tim Sinatra from the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club are the guests in the studio as we talk all things non-profit.

They talk about how to build an organization from scratch, the hurdles organizations have to overcome to be classified as a non-profit, and why not all non-profits are tax exempt. Tim Sinatra, as the leader of a branch of a national organization, also talks about the advantages and disadvantages of being part of a larger non-profit network. How are non-profits regulated? How do they get their funds? Find out all you need to know about charitable organizations, here on the Wake-Up Call.
