An examination of ‘Buy Local, Eat Local’ in Charlottesville

This week on WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call the conversation is all about the ‘Buy Local, Eat Local’ food scene. Area restaurateurs Kate Collier (Feast!) and Will Richey (Revolutionary Soup) join Melissa Harris and Jennifer Seidel from the new Flavor magazine along with host Rick Moore to discuss independent farms and sustainable agriculture. How do current Virginia laws help the large, industrial food system while hurting area farmers? How is it financially viable for a small restaurant to use better tasting but more expensive foods? Exactly what is a super-model vegetable and why are they to be shunned? What can you do to help this concept continue its growth?

    Exploring Charlottesville’s Earth Week

On this edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call, Amy Predmore and Tatyanna Patten, Co-Presidents of Charlottesville’s Earth Week, join Rick Moore to talk about the 10-day celebration. Predmore and Patten discuss some of the general trends of the environmental movement, as well as the events coming up locally for Earth Week (which runs April 18-27). From environmental movies to tree plantings and concerts, there are more than a dozen events on the calendar.

The guests also discuss the Discover Transportation Freedom Initiative, a plan to get people to discover alternatives to commuting by car; as well as the effort to popularize Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs.

Amy Predmore says that Earth Week is about “bringing together people who care about change.” If you want to see change, you can get involved by donating or attending Earth Week events. For more information, you can contact Earth Week on their website.

What will a new coal power plant mean?

On the March 9th edition of the Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call on WNRN, two representatives from Appalachian Voices join host Rick Moore to talk about Dominion Virginia’s plans to build a new coal power plant in Southwestern Virginia. Tom Cormons is the director of the Charlottesville offices for Appalachian Voices, and Mike McCoy is a field organizer from Richmond - they discuss the so-called “green” power plant: why it’s important to Dominion Virginia, what makes it “green,” and what it could have on the area.

Callers chime in with their questions about the plant: How many jobs will this provide? Why has this plant been getting so much media attention? What are the pros and cons? Find out all about the proposed power plant, as well as learn about some of the other environmental issues Appalachian Voices deals with - only on the Wake-Up Call!

Express your opinion about the power plan by commenting after the show!

For more information, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has posted links to Dominion’s application for a permit that will explain the company’s attempts to limit air pollution from the facility, including mitigation plans. The facility is known as the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center, and the engineering analysis is halfway down the page.
DEQ is taking public comment until March 12.
